Camping in Andasibe National Park

Itinerary

Day 1: Antananarivo to Andasibe (150km - 3h30mn drive)

  • Leave Antananarivo after breakfast and the briefing, heading for Andasibe National Park that is also known as Perinet. On the way, we will stop for a visit of a private reserve called Peyrieras that’s home to chameleons, frogs, snakes and so much more wildlife. It was founded and owned by the French entomologist and naturalist André Peyriéras, which is why it is also known as the Reserve Peyrieras. The collection includes many reptiles (chameleons, iguanas, geckos, and frogs), batraciens (amphibians), crocodiles and papillons (butterflies). The adjacent forest area supports families of relocated and habituated Verreaux's sifaka and common brown lemur which provide opportunities to photograph them close up at feeding times. The evening or other free time are usually spent around a campfire, folk music animation, puzzle games, group cohesion games or Malagasy typical games.
  • Included Activities: Peyrieras Private Reserve visit
  • Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Accommodation: Shared tent

Day 2 : Andasibe National Park

  • During a guided walk for about 2 hours, we will explore the fauna and flora of Andasibe National Park which is the most visited park in the country and famous for its 11 species of lemur. It is a home to the world’s biggest living lemurs called “Indri Indri”. Aside from lemurs, you’ll find endemic birds including the long-eared owl and the rufous-headed ground roller, as well as the smallest living chameleon – brookesia minima – and many types of reptiles, insects and frogs. Indri simply means ‘there it is’ in the Malagasy language. The species got its name from local people shouting ‘indri, indri!’ when pointing out the animal to European naturalists. The Betsimisaraka tribal name for the species, ‘babakoto’, means ‘ancestor of man’. This may be because it is the largest living lemur, and is the only species that lacks a tail. Because of this, it receives a degree of protection from native fady (taboo) traditions that prohibit its consumption. At the end of the day, we will have an opportunity to go on a night walk around the VOIMMA reserve where we can encounter nocturnal species like endemic butterflies and lemurs. Do not forget your flashlight! The evening or other free time are usually spent around a campfire, folk music animation, puzzle games, group cohesion games or Malagasy typical games.
