Sleeping at night under the sound of the waves, waking up in the morning with your feet in the water, going to the market with the kids to choose what you want to eat for breakfast and lunch, cooking with Joe on an open terrace, with a beautiful view. Chilling or surfing all day, it all depends on your energy because you are free. Where we are a bit strict is only about respecting the balance of nature. But first, let me tell you the story of this surf shack.
Marcel Ravelomanantsoa, the first promoter of surfing in Fort-Dauphin, opened the Lenda surf school a long time ago. His son, Joe Kennedy, followed in his father's steps not only by becaming a certified instructor, but also the Madagascar Open Champion. From the Ampotatra district, mainly inhabited by the Antandroy ethnic group, they decided to mobilize all the children and young people in their neighbourhood to clean and develop the entire beach. It is important to note that Ampotatra beach was where the inhabitants used to relieve themselves despite the toilets installed by the commune. Following this, the ASAF or Association des Surfeurs Avenir de Fort-dauphin was created. It was a lot of work, but they fought and helped each other to have their own beach to surf, they made requests for donations and fundraising to finance the construction of their hut and chalet, and they succeeded. They then tried to make these profitable by lodging and catering, to have funds for the association's needs.
Today, given the insufficient number of boards and the increasing number of children who want to learn to surf, their new method is that "whoever has done beach clean up and brings back a bag of wastes can have a board for him for one hour". And it works, their beach stays clean, the kids are happy, the adults very satisfied with their motivation. The happiest is their mascot, a majestic "Ankoay", an endemic eagle specie from Madagascar, but also the name of the national basketball team. They have rescued the little bird and it don't want to leave them anymore. He will be your best friend during your stay.
