TOLIARA
Discover TOLIARA
Toliara is one of Madagascar’s six provinces, located in the country’s arid southwest. It encompasses four regions—Androy, Anosy, Atsimo Andrefana, and Menabe—divided into nine districts. The largest city in the province, also named Toliara, has a population of under 200,000. Four main tribal groups call this region home: the Vezo, Masikoro, Mahafaly, and Antandroy.
Life in this part of the country can be especially challenging due to an ongoing drought, limited economic opportunities, and security concerns. As a result, many people from Toliara are migrating to other parts of Madagascar in search of better prospects.
This mass migration is a deeply troubling trend—especially given how much this province has to offer. With its stunning beaches, abundant seafood, and warm, inviting climate, Toliara is rich in both natural beauty and cultural heritage. At TourOnePlanet, our mission is to work hand-in-hand with local vendors to create meaningful opportunities—so that people can choose to stay, thrive, and build sustainable livelihoods in the place they call home.
