TOAMASINA

Discover Toamasina

Toamasina is considered the economic capital of Madagascar, serving as the country’s primary hub for imports and exports through the Port of Tamatave. The province includes three regions—Atsinanana, Analanjirofo, and Amoron’i Mania—and is divided into 18 districts. Its largest city, also named Toamasina (or “Tamatave”), has a population of around 300,000, making it the second-largest city in the country. Just off the coast lies the picturesque island getaway of Nosy Boraha, also known as Île Sainte-Marie—a beloved destination for both locals and travelers.

The dominant ethnic group in this region is the Betsimisaraka. Toamasina is known for its peaceful vibe and beautiful beaches, especially ideal for watching the sunrise. The province is lush with rivers that flow into the sea, creating fertile lands nourished by a rain-rich, tropical climate. One of the region’s standout features is its thriving music scene. Toamasina has given rise to some of Madagascar’s most renowned artists, including Shyn and Denise, who continue to shine on the global stage.
