MAHAJANGA

Discover MAHAJANGA

Mahajanga is one of Madagascar’s six provinces, located in the country’s northwest. Known for having the hottest climate on the island, it’s a place where the sun always seems to shine. The province is divided into four regions—Betsiboka, Boeny, Melaky, and Sofia—and includes 21 districts. Mahajanga also holds historical significance as one of the first landing points for Arab traders who settled in Madagascar centuries ago.

The largest city, also called Mahajanga (or Majunga), is a lively coastal hub with a population of over 250,000 people. Visitors can enjoy a vibrant nightlife along the bord de la mer, where local food, music, and ocean views come together in unforgettable ways. One of the city’s standout landmarks is a massive baobab tree, estimated to be nearly 300 years old. Like Antsiranana, Mahajanga is home to a diverse mix of ethnic groups, with the Sakalava and Tsimihety being the predominant communities.

If you’re feeling chilled from the cool air of Madagascar’s central highlands, don’t miss the chance to head west and warm up under Mahajanga’s glowing red sun!
