ANTANANARIVO
Welcome to ANTANANARIVO
Antananarivo—often called “Tana” and known as the “City of a Thousand”—is Madagascar’s bustling capital. Home to nearly 4 million people, the city still feels surprisingly intimate, where it’s not uncommon for everyone to know everyone. While Tana is often viewed as a mere starting point—thanks to its status as the main hub for international arrivals—it’s far more than just a gateway. Beneath its chaotic charm lies a city rich with culture, history, and unexpected beauty. Exploring its hills, alleys, and markets with a local vendor can uncover stories and secrets that feel almost unbelievable. If you can, carve out at least a day to experience what Tana truly has to offer—both in its vibrant neighborhoods and the peaceful countryside just beyond.
But Antananarivo isn’t just a city—it’s also one of Madagascar’s six provinces. Within it lie four regions: Analamanga, Bongolava, Itasy, and Vakinankaratra, which are further divided into 20 districts. The dominant tribe in this area is the Merina, who have historically held the greatest political influence in the country. One of the most well-known destinations beyond the capital is Antsirabe, a charming city of just under 300,000 people. Whether as a stop on your journey south or as a destination in its own right, Antsirabe is a must-see—an agricultural hub famed for its cooler climate, thermal springs, and colonial-era architecture.
