Morondava
Morondava is a laid-back coastal city on Madagascar’s west coast with a population of around 70,000 people. The greater district holds over 150,000 residents and is predominantly home to the Sakalava people, along with Vezo and Makoa communities.
Often treated as the final stop on a long travel circuit, Morondava is where many travelers catch a flight back to Antananarivo—but there’s still so much more adventure to be had. The city is the closest hub to iconic destinations like the Tsiribihina River, the famous Avenue of the Baobabs, and the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. It also serves as the starting point for one of Madagascar’s most thrilling backroad journeys south to Toliara. Just be sure to hire an experienced driver—this route is not for the faint of heart.
Within Morondava itself, you’ll find beautiful beaches like Kimony Beach, where you can unwind after your travels. There’s also a local fishers’ association offering unique excursions through the mangroves, often culminating in a beachside picnic—an unforgettable way to experience the rhythms of daily life and the region’s natural beauty.
