Diego-Suarez

Diego-Suarez, still the most commonly used name for what is officially called Antsiranana, is a vibrant city on the northern tip of Madagascar, rich in history and coastal charm. With a population of around 200,000, it’s one of the country’s largest urban centers and serves as a major gateway to the Diana region.

The city played a pivotal role during the colonial era, witnessing clashes between the French and British. Its name reflects early Portuguese influence—named after explorers Diego Diaz and Fernando Suarez.

The official name, Antsiranana, honors Philibert Tsiranana, Madagascar’s first president, who was born in the broader Antsiranana Province.

Known for its laid-back mora mora lifestyle, Diego-Suarez is beloved for its natural beauty and relaxed pace. Travelers are drawn to the tranquil shores of Ramena Beach, the mystical islet of Nosy Lonja, and the surrounding emerald bays and dramatic coastline.

Whether you’re exploring colonial forts, diving into Malagasy history, or simply soaking up the northern sun, Diego-Suarez offers a colorful and welcoming escape.
