Antsirabe

Antsirabe is often seen as just a stopover on the way to Madagascar’s southern destinations. With limited vacation time, that’s understandable—but it’s also a missed opportunity. This highland city has a charm all its own. With a population of over 265,000, it’s the third-largest city in the country and also known for having the coldest temperatures in Madagascar.

Often referred to as the agricultural capital, Antsirabe is famous for its dairy products, potatoes, and a wide range of locally grown goods. But there’s more to the city than farming. It has a rich history and is home to skilled artisans who produce everything from detailed miniatures to traditional textiles.

For the adventurous, there are natural hot springs, scenic hiking trails, and even a volcanic lake where you can swim—just be sure to respect local taboos, such as avoiding pork before taking a dip.
