Andavadoaka is a small village making a big impact.
Located on Madagascar’s southwest coast in the Atsimo Andrefana region of Toliara Province, it is home to the Vezo people—a semi-nomadic community deeply connected to the sea. While exact population numbers are hard to determine, estimates place it between 5,000 and 10,000.

The village is not only recognized for its pioneering efforts in community-led marine conservation, but it also holds special significance for us at TourOnePlanet. In 2017, our founder completed his first internship in Madagascar here. Witnessing firsthand how local communities—when provided with the right tools, education, and resources—could make decisions that improved both their livelihoods and the environment was profoundly inspiring.

That experience helped plant the seed for what would eventually grow into TourOnePlanet. Andavadoaka remains a powerful example of what’s possible when communities are empowered to lead their own future.
