Located about 35km from Fort-Dauphin, Lokaro is unanimously the most popular tourist site in the area. A group of peninsulas separated by mouths or sandbanks, this little corner of paradise will give you a total change of scenery.
Taking the RN12 takes around a hour and a half through breathtaking landscapes with endemic plants and animals along the way.
Motocross, quad or mountain bike enthusiasts can also bring their two-wheeled vehicle in the bed of our truck to test a part of the route under our supervision at the back. In order to enjoy the trip to the fullest, we will leave Fort-Dauphin no later than 8am and drive slowly with several stops for tasting food and taking photos.
We will arrive in Lokaro around 11am to set up our things as we will spend the night there. For lunch, we will have the privilege to eat seafood that they have just brought back from the sea.
Once your stomach is full, we will let you rest for the afternoon or enjoy the different beaches that this beautiful place offers. The more energetic can enjoy a pirogue trip around the mouth or a short walk in the heart of the village to meet the local children.
While watching the sunset, we will teach you how to cook the dinner, which will be "vary amin'anana", a traditional Malagasy way of cooking red rice as a light soup with a mixture of leaves and lots of ginger.
After a night's rest lulled by the sounds of the ocean, we will prepare a breakfast by the sea worthy of a luxurious hotel: toast, fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, cheese, eggs, etc. This will give you much needed strength for the hike that awaits you.
From Lokaro, there is only a 5km drive to Hôvatraha, so we walk back through forests, hills, natural pools, creeks to get to the shipwreck at the mouth of the river. After taking our time to look around, it is time to join Marie Angèle, the elder of the village who waits to tell us the history of Hôvatraha. She will introduce us to the community of fishers and the Mahampy weavers, and will give us a guided tour of the village.
As Malagasy hospitality always includes food, she will also invite you to her table to offer you a typical Antanosy meal. After this comforting lunch, we take the road back to Fort-Dauphin at around 3pm.
